| The research project is proposed
to investigate the interactive relations |
| among performers, audience and
the acoustical qualities of concert halls. |
| Stage acoustics were evaluated
in three halls regarding solo and chamber music |
| performances. In each hall
professional performers were seated in two |
| locations with and without
detached side reflectors. Music of piano or violin |
| solo, piano sonata, piano trio
and brass quintet was played in styles from |
| Baroque to Romantic Era. The
performers expressed their opinions about |
| hearing oneself, hearing others,
ease of ensemble, and overall impression and |
| the audiences were asked about
the strength of individual parts and overall |
| impression. As a result, most
acoustical environments were acceptable to |
| performers. In each hall the
location near the edge of the stage with side |
| reflectors was the most
preferred environment regarding overall impression. |
| For the audiences, this is also
the environment that provided the best balance |
| among individual parts while in
larger halls the piano appeared to be over |
| powered.. The preferred stage
size is greater than what suggested by Marshall. |
| Overall impression was
significantly correlated with all of the subjective |
| attributes and there was a
strong relations between hearing others and ease of |
| ensemble (r=0.921). The brass
favored higher early–to-direct energy ratio ( |
| ED80) than did the
others. On-going research is conducted to collect data in |
| other halls. |
