The Design Strategy of Taiwanese Regionalism in the Works of S.Y. Huang

 Abstract

By the development of Taiwan’s cities and countryside during 1980s, a serious of research of regional architecture has been experimenting in Yi-Lan in recent years. Furthermore, as the experience of autonomic regional development in Yi-Lan, the issue of regional identity has started to be discussed broadly in the 90s. “The experience of Yi-Lan” has become a pronoun of regional architecture in Taiwan at that period. Since the development of contemporary architecture in Taiwan still follows the sequence of Western modern architecture, researching the issue of regionalism architecture could further understand the development of architecture in Taiwan.

This study is based on nine public buildings which designed by Sheng-Yuan Huang. According to the aspects of spatial arrangements, materials, and design strategies, the key elements which influence idea of regionalism construction will be discussed. Following the analysis of the framework of Huang’s cases, the design methods of how he practices his regionalism could be disclosed. Furthermore, as the studies which are illustrated above, this thesis will discuss the evolution of his public buildings and social welfare institutions design projects. The direct and indirect connections between these cases and critical regionalism will be explained. Based on the framework of Kenneth Frampton’s tectonic theory, the analysis of the connection between Huang’s design methods and tectonic thinking will also be discussed. Through the integrated analysis, this thesis reveals the essential meanings in his regional design agenda.

As the result of the study, we may conclude that Huang uses the images and meanings of nature and climate what he captured through Yi-Lan to be an imitational subject of architecture design. He responses the cultural symbol of specific regional environments through design methods of imitation. The relationship of constructional composition was used to reflect his internal space design. The expression of values identification and design strategies could be understood beyond other local architects in Yi-Lan.
