Unite d’Habitation in Marseilles, Le Corbusier, Architectural case study e-books, Architectural case study interactive games
The Unite d’Habitation in Marseilles (Housing Unit in Marseilles) is a housing complex developed by Le Corbusier for people who lost their homes during the Second World War. The Unite d’Habitation in Marseilles was built in a preset concrete structural framework and comprised 337 apartments featuring 23 types of residential units.
Although numerous studies have been conducted on the Unite d’Habitation in Marseilles worldwide, none has performed an in-depth investigation on the 23 types of residential units and their composition. This study constructed a 3D model to analyze how Le Corbusier incorporated the housing units into a complex 3D structural framework. Subsequently, this study explored the location and naming of these housing units, their interactions and connections with internal circulatoion and public facilities, and factors that limited their operations during actual construction.
This study used Le Corbusier’s methods to “regroup” the Unite d’Habitation in Marseilles under identical conditions (e.g., 23 types of residential units, 337 apartments, public facilities, seven parallel internal streets that divide the site plane, and elevators that serve as cores of service in the vertical direction), producing more than one type of combinations for the Unite d’Habitation in Marseilles.
Finally, this study combined e-book technology with interactive games to help different types of readers to understand the methods used to construct the Unite d’Habitation in Marseilles and Le Corbusier’s design philosophies. The readers were provided with an interaction–imagination–immersion–creation-oriented learning experience, and their learning results were obtained by studying their game-playing results. Unfortunately, because of limited software development technology, this study was unable to make e-book and interactive games commercially available. However, the complete development framework may still be used by future developers when designing e-books and games.
