"十九世紀一個顯著使用鋼鐵的一個最大的文化建築，毫無疑問是在巴黎的Bibliotheque Ste. Genevieve，由Henri Labrouste所設計和建造的(1842-50)。它的結構於規劃上充滿一個寬廣的,淺的位置迷惑與簡單且大跨距(278經由69呎)是傳說上有名的二個特色：以左較低的地板被疊加所佔有，以右稀有書儲藏與辦公室空間，以一個中心的玄關和樓梯指導到這間閱覽室，那個充滿全部的較高的樓層。纖細柱子，鋼鐵構造充滿整個較高樓層的閱覽室。一個修長的脊柱，鑄鐵製的愛澳尼克柱式區分兩走道的空間，並且支撐有網狀的鐵拱頂，並由鐵網加強了在拱頂上的快速施工塗漿，它總是成為被尊崇的現代建築，也是一個紀念性與高技術的建築物領導。
